Saturday, June 11, 2016 starting at 10:00am
Morris V. Shelanski is life long collector of Fine Arts and Antiques. He was born to European immigrants and grew up in South Philadelphia during the depression. Upon graduating from South Philadelphia High School he was awarded a scholarship to Harvard. While studying biochemistry there he took a humanities course in archeology and ancient civilizations where his passion for classical art was kindled. He went on to medical school, served in the Navy and went to work in Pharmaceutical R&D holding several important patents in the field.
From the 1950s through the 1970s he acquired many fine objects in his weekend travels to antique shops on Pine Street and the surrounding Philadelphia suburbs. He bought with unbridled enthusiasm from classic cars to classical arts. He also bought in quantity. Prominent dealer Phil Bradley once remarked that while on a buying outing to Pine Street in the 1960s that he could not buy a single painting because Dr. Shelanski had already bought them all.
The majority of these objects have been in storage for over 40 years, many even longer, some having been packed away upon purchase.
This auction consists of over 150 paintings from 16th to 20th centuries, over 50 prints and etchings from 17th to 19th centuries, large selection of antique and semi-antique Oriental Carpets, crib quilts, Arts and Crafts oak furniture, period and period style furniture, bronze sculptures, Orientalia, 18th & 19th century rhinoceros horn libation cups, woodenwares, Metalwares, etc.
