Private Collection, New Mexico
Forced to be away from human friends, artist Santiago Rivera spent the last year creating and preparing a new body of work that expresses his Native Mescalero Apache culture and life experience. He has used this tumultuous time to dive deeper and push further into his creative landscape. "I made connections by making new works that are like family, I don’t want to part with them.” Santiago’s new works on canvas are an abstract/cubist collection of traditional themes, his interpretation of stories told to him in childhood. A traditional palette of colors express the spiritual emotions of the characters he portrays. The collection welcomes us into an unknown world inhabited by spirits hovering just above the ancestral plain. “I have painted, sculpted and drawn my entire life. I am fortunate enough to have my creations in stone, bronze, wood and canvas in collections all over the world. Have won numerous awards everything from best of show to honorable mention. Have been awarded scholarships to attend Pilchuck School of Glass by Chateau St. Michelle and Glass Alliance New Mexico. Honored to have been nominated for a Corning Award. But more than anything else, I want Contemporary Native American Art to be celebrated as much as any other genre. Whatever small part I have in that endeavor is true success!”
