Description
This is an intriguing piece for Nevada history collectors. First, this is a rare Comstock mining stock. Second, it is signed by William Sharon's nephew, who came to the Comstock and took over many of the operations for his uncle. Third, it may have been issued to famous Nevada author (and close friend of Mark Twain) William Wright, aka Dan de Quille. Location: Flowery Mining District, Storey County, Nev. (printed in the left border). Inc. Sept. 19th, 1878. No. 224, issued for 550 shares to William Wright on May 10th, 1879 in Virginia (City), Nevada. Not endorsed on the back by Wright. Signed by president Oliver and secretary W. E. Sharon. Not cancelled. Black border and print, small Nevada state seal vignette. Printed by Enterprise Steam Print. Deep folds, light wear. Located near the famous Lady Bryan and involved in a law suit with them. There was more than one William Wright on the Comstock. However, Dan de Quille, William Wright, was definitely still in Virginia City at the time of this certificate and was a noted expert on mining! The two other possibilities could be a soda manufacturer and a miner [x=#241/] not so probable. Lists pros and cons of all possibilities. Biography on the Wright's and Sharon. Short description of the mine and district.Date: 1878Country (if not USA): State: NevadaCity: Virginia City, StoreyProvenance: Joe Elcano Nevada Mining Stock Collection
