Considered the most famous "kiss" in history, the black and white photograph, taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt, shows a sailor kissing a woman in Times Square after news broke of the Japanese surrender in World War II. Signed and inscribed in black ink by the sailor in the photo, "Turner Square V.J. Day 8/14/45. USS the Sullivans 1942-1946. George Mendonsa QM 1/c" as well as the nurse, "Greta Z. Friedman." Fine condition with bold signatures. 8" x 10", n.p., n.d.
This iconic photograph has lived a storied life since it was taken on August 15, 1945. Often called “The Kiss,” it became "THE" image of celebration at war’s end, a black-and-white bookend separating an era of darkness from the beginning of a time of peace. The photo was published in Life magazine, titled "V-J Day in Times Square", and captured the iconic moment of American people in a moment of celebration and relief.
