Description
Frigate Coming into Port (Ship Gov. Goodwin) written on tag verso, oil on canvas. 27 x 36 1/2 inches (overall) signed and dated 1845. Provenance: By Descent through the Lear-Storer-Decatur family, one encompassing a number of important historical figures from the Seventeenth through the Nineteenth Centuries. Their roots begin with Sir William Pepperell Baronet, born June 27, 1696, in Kittery Point, a successful merchant and soldier in colonial Massachusetts. Another important historical figure from the family was Lear, the personal secretary to President George Washington and one of Washington’s best friends. Washington was the godfather of Lear’s son, Benjamin Lincoln Lear.
