Description

attributed to Annapolis, Maryland, 1760 to 1770, with pierced splat and scrolled arms, blue damask upholstered slip seat, cabriole legs with pad feet, yellow pine slip seat inscribed "N Randall," 38-1/4 x 24 -3/4 x 22-1/2 in.

Note: This rare chair is accompanied by extensive notes and discussion from Sumter Priddy. He notes that:

"This exceptional armchair represents one of the most fully developed baroque examples of the form presently recognized from the Chesapeake, and hails from a small group originating in Annapolis, Maryland. The earliest of the group date to the period 1745-1755, and descended through the Brice Family of that city. The sole armchair from the set has four notable features also found here on the Randall chair. These include, first, the distinctive cabriole legs with turned pad feet; secondly, the double though-tenons that reinforce the side rails of the seat where they pierce the rear stiles; third, the undercut seat rails; and fourth, the out-turned, cyma-shaped arms, with subtly-carved scrolls at the front terminus...

front legs formerly with shallow later carving now removed by conservators Steve Leckemby and Allen Buisch of Liberty Town, Maryland; knee returns at front legs restored, small patch at one front toe, other typical cracks including at arm tops and hand grips, other minor surface wear,
