Francesco Piranesi (1758 Rom - 1810 Paris) after Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720 Mogliano Veneto - 1778 Venice): Temple of Isis and Egyptian temple in the ruins of Pompeii, 1806, Etching


Technique: Etching on Paper


Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Dessiné par F. B. Piranesi / Gravé par F. Piranesi L'an 1806". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "Perspective du Temple d'Isis, et du petit Temple Egyptien tels qu'ils se trouvent ajourdhuy[...]".


Date: 1806


Description: Depiction of the ruins of Pompeii with the remains of two temples. Classical architectural elements such as columns, arches and beams are depicted in decay. Dramatic shadow play and finely detailed drawing emphasise the transience and grandeur of the scene.

Rather good condition. There is a full-page vertical crease in the centre. Further crease marks to the side. Pale liquid stain at the lower left and right edge. Stained and browned along the edges. Significant damage along the centre of the upper edge of the sheet due to tears to the edge.
