Description
A Japanese 'Moga' painting, mounted as a Kakejiku, in ink and colours in silk depicting a young beauty with short waved hair and wearing a swimming suit with cape, she stands on a rocky promontory with pines in the distance, signed (Unkyo) and sealed; mounted within a brocaded silk surround With the invasion of Westerners to Meiji Era Japan came a fashion for European dress. The novelty of post World War I fashions and the adventurousness of The Roaring Twenties gripped Japan and the whole 'Moga' art style developed in the 1920's and 1930's. The term 'Moga' is a Japanese corruption of the words 'Modern' and 'Girl' and was applied across a range of art works from that period.
