Description
Document signed by Oliver Wolcott, a member of the Continental Congress (from the colony of Connecticut) and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. It is a pay order for Jesse Brown, post rider to the Continental Congress. This document is written entirely in Oliver Wolcott's own hand during the Revolutionary War and is docketed on the reverse side as follows: "Ord'r (Order) / O. Wolcott sq. / dat'd (dated) 14th March 1782 / L 50.00 (pounds). The document is addressed to Connecticut Treasurer "John Lawrence Esq." and reads in full: "Sir - As Mr. Browne has advanced me this money upon my special Request as it was indispensably necessary for me. I hope that it will be in your Power to answer my order upon being presented so that he might not suffer any Disappointment - I am sir with much Respect / your most obed't (obedient) Servant / Oliver Wolcott (signed)." The document measures approximately 7 ½" x 7 ¾" and is in fine overall condition with dark writing, a bold signature, and some original folds.
