Description
DESCRIPTION: Signed Joseph D'Aste (French, 1872-1940) "Les Bergers" bisque biscuit porcelain group figural sculpture, depicting a pair of lovers figures, Myriame et Daphne, a shepherd and shepherdess, both characters from "Les Bergers", a three-act opéra comique of 1865 with music by Jacques Offenbach. With an engraved signature and title on verso: "J. DAste" and "Les Bergers".

Joseph (Giuseppe) D'Aste (1881-1945) was a French sculptor of Italian origin. Born in Naples, he moved to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. In the years 1905-1934 he exhibited his works at the Paris Salon. He is known for his works 'fete champetre' depicting idyllic scenes from the lives of shepherds.
