Description: Quinq divi Augusti historiarum libri Tacitus (Cornelius) P. Cornelli Taciti ab exccessu divi... Florence: Philippi Iuntae, 1527; Vellum bound; size 4 1/4 by 6 3/4"; title and A2 with marginal repairs, some early marginalia, DL Cumming autograph. Politico and historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus lived in ancient Rome from approximately AD 56 to 120. Most contemporary historians agree that Tacitus was one of the best Roman historians. His two great works, the Annals (Latin: Annales) and the Histories (Latin: Historiae), of which only fragments survive, study the reigns of Nero, Tiberius, Claudius, and those who ruled during the Year of the Four Emperors (69 AD). These two volumes, however with significant gaps in the extant texts, cover the history of the Roman Empire from the death of Augustus (14 AD) until the death of Domitian (96 AD). Other works by Tacitus address Germania (in De origine et situ Germanorum), oratory (in dialogue form, see Dialogus de oratoribus), and his father-in-law Agricola (the general who commanded most of the Roman conquest of Britain), with particular emphasis on his campaign in Britannia (De vita et moribus Iulii Agricolae). Tacitus's Annals are noteworthy because they include the first non-Biblical mention of Jesus' crucifixion as well as an early narrative of Christian persecution.
