Anton Lehmden, from Neutra in Czechoslovakia, was an Austrian painter and grafic artist. He went to Vienna in 1945 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. Here his teachers included Albert Paris Guetersloh and Robin Christian Andersen. He first exhibited his works in the Art Club in 1948. Lehmden's pictures were and are inspired by landscapes and nature - birds are among his favorite motifs. But he was also influenced by his experiences in the Second World War and later by the architecture he encountered on his travels. The painter found models in Chinese landscape painting and in old masters such as Pieter Bruegel and Hieronymus Bosch. Along with Rudolf Hausner and his fellow students Ernst Fuchs, Wolfgang Hutter and Arik Brauer, Anton Lehmden was one of the founders and main representatives of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. Lehmden had his first solo exhibition in Turin in 1949. Numerous other international exhibitions followed. Lehmden took part in the Venice Biennale (1950, 1952) and Sao Paolo (1953); his works have been seen in Philadelphia, Amsterdam, Cairo, Los Angeles, New York, Montevideo and Tokyo, among others. In 1962/1963 Lehmden taught in Istanbul, where the pictures in the St. George's Church, which belongs to the Austrian St. George's College, are one of the artist's main works. Anton Lehmden led the painting class at the Salzburg Summer Academy in 1969 and 1975. From 1971 to 1997 Anton Lehmden was professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and head of the master class for painting. Lehmden designed the 360 ??m² glass mosaic “The Making of Nature” for the Volkstheater U3 station, which opened in 1991. In 2001, Lehmden was significantly involved in the redesign of the parish church in his adopted home of Deutschkreutz. The artist had already acquired the Renaissance castle Deutschkreutz in Burgenland in 1966, gradually restored it and expanded it into a cultural center. Literary and musical events have been taking place here since 2003, and the artist has been holding the “Lehmden Summer Academy” since 2005. In 1999, Anton Lehmden was made an honorary citizen of Deutschkreutz.
