Josef Mikl was an Austrian artist. From 1946 to 1948, he attended the Hoehere Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna. From 1948 to 1955, he went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Josef Dobrowsky, without obtaining a final diploma. In 1956, he founded the artist group “Galerie nächst St. Stephan” with Wolfgang Hollegha, Markus Prachensky and Arnulf Rainer. His son Franz Wibmer, who is also a painter, was born in 1962. In 1964, Mikl exhibited at documenta III; In 1977 he took part in documenta 6. In 1968, Mikl represented Austria at the Venice Biennale. From 1969 to 1997, Mikl was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Mikl represented abstract realism with the human figure as the central theme. Drawings were of particular importance to him. In 2023, the Gemeindebau (Municipal Tenement Building) at Schoenbrunner Straße 242 in Vienna's 12th district (Meidling) was named Josef-Mikl-Hof.
