Description
second half 19th century, 246 x 161 cm, South Caucasus, Azerbaijan
BENARDOUT, RAYMOND, Caucasian Rugs. London 1978, ill. p. 93 *** ESKENAZI, JOHN J., L'Arte del Tappeto Orientale. Milan 1983, no. 74
The red field is entirely taken up by a large green-ground shield medallion of the Konagkend type with a wide white outline and four octagons placed on the central axis. A wealth of different decorative motifs is arranged around it. In the white main border, a vine links geometric, abstract star-shaped blossoms.
Slight signs of age and wear, various minor repiled areas. The two upper corners have been restored, the lower finish is somewhat reduced. The original flatwoven selvedges survive. Provenance: Ehrengard Freifrau von Trotha Collection. Formerly in the collection of Peter-Christian Graf von Kleist-Retzow
