Description
It is presumed today that Eagle group carpets were woven by Goklen tribes in southwest Turkestan. The tent bags are usually wider than a torba and not as tall as a chuval. The usual method of classifying Turkmen bags by their format therefore does not appear suitable for these rare works. The Hoffmeister example is a bag and not a trapping, as proven by the original kilim back. The drawing is excellent and the colours are of outstanding quality. The most comparable example is the bag published for the first time in 1956 by Haack and then in 1990 by Rautenstengel / Azadi, which was exhibited in 1993 in Hamburg.
Slight sign of age and wear, low spots in the pile, slightly damaged sides, original finishes all around. Provenance: Peter Hoffmeister Collection, Dorfles-Esbach
