Description
Kloss, Gene (1903-1996)
Clouds at Sunset.
Printed for The Print Club of Albany, ca. 1952.
Etching and aquatint on paper, one of 200 copies produced for club members, titled and signed by Kloss on the lower blank margin, matted; 16 ¾ x 11 in.
California-born Kloss studied etching with Perham Nahl at UC Berkeley before taking a honeymoon trip to New Mexico with her poet husband Phillips Kloss. The trip ignited a fascination with Southwestern landscapes and culture which informed her future works as a printer. In the accompanying advertisement for the present lot, Kloss states that Clouds at Sunset is, "A simple subject with complex overtones-to me a manifestation of the Divine in light and space, a place of peace, serenity, purity, and freedom in a land untrammeled by human habitation."
