New York-based Elizabeth Peyton rose to prominence after her 1993 exhibition of historical portraits at the Chelsea Hotel. She is known for her intimate portraits from history, ranging from Napoleon Bonaparte to this lot depicting Elliott Smith (1969-2003), the musician/singer-songwriter known for his "whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery" (Steve Huey, AllMusic). Peyton produced many different portraits of Smith at the height of his career. Tragically, the 1999 portraits also coincide with a massive decline in Smith's state of mental health, as he plunged deeper into depression with the rise of his musical fame.
