Description
Elaborate ca. 1680-1700, needlework depicting the five senses, lovers seated on a garden bench with Cupid behind. Above them sits a mythological figure surrounded by animals, beneath a tree, below lies a pond with swan and fish. The four corners depicting figures symbolic of hearing, sight, smell, and taste. Densely embroidered with silk and metallic threads, cut silk and coiled wire, embellished with spangles, beads, coral, glass, and shells. Image 19” x 21”, overall in an antique frame with carved gilt wood liner 21.5” x 24”. Provenance: Cain Collection, MacKay-Field Collection.

Not examined out of frame, color fading, thread ware, other wear commensurate for age.
