Item Details
Description
Dated 1590. Body only, the mounts likely stripped for the scrap drives of WWII. 10” length with characteristic Saxon “roped scales” edge decoration. One side with Bacchanalian semi-erotic scene of a couple in alcohol-fueled romance and a figure beyond pouring more. The other with compass work and central armorial device surrounded by a band inscribed Frater Joannes Wihoyone 1590. Frater is Latin for monk, thus this is the flask of a monk whose identity is lost to history. Great project for the amateur restorer as the mounts are basically fabricated from sheet metal.
