Description
Native American, North America, Pacific Northwest (USA and Canada), Kwakwaka'wakw or Haida tribe, ca. middle of the 20th century CE. A beautiful rattle depicting a stylized bear, hand-carved from hardwood and finely-detailed in a characteristic Northwest Coast style. The rattle portion displays an intriguing guise with concentric ringed eyes surrounded by black pigment, a rounded nose with two pronounced nostrils, large arching eyebrows, and a mouth which has a large toothy smile - with bright red lips. The reverse is also carved in high relief with the face of a human with double pupils in mother of pearl and long tongue held in his hands. The rattle itself is filled with several rattle balls (inserted by removing the back half of the head) which emit a bright sound when jostled around. A lengthy handle with a flat base projects from the bottom of the rattle and is incredibly smooth from repeated use. Size: 11" H (27.9 cm)
