An early 18th century carnelian intaglio ring by gem engraver Nathaniel Marchant (1739-1816). The yellow gold ring fitted with an oval shaped orangish-red cornelian carved intaglio depictingclassical profiles of Cupid and Psyche embracing. Described on page 19 in "A Catalogue of One Hundred Impressions from Gems, Engraved by N. Marchant' by Edward James (1757-1816), as 'Cupid And Psyche: From a group in the MuseumCapitolinum. This group was found , in the year 1749, on Mount Aventine'. Signed 'Marchant'. Size 6 1/2. Band cut. Testing low carat gold. Total weight: 12.6g.Marchant, Nathaniel, Francesco Bartolozzi, James Edwards, Nathaniel Marchant, and Clayton Mordaunt Cracherode.
