Antique Christian Icon, Lithograph, signed: C. Heichele, 1892.
Size: 65 x 48 cm. (25.5 x 18.8 inches)
Lithograph laid to carton, strip to edges.
Good condition.
This is a chromolithograph after the statue of the Mother of Sorrows of Mount Calvary gifted to the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem by Queen Mary I of Portugal. The print is signed C. Heichele. It has written in Latin “Mater Dolorosa in Monte Calvario Venerata. Terra” which means Mother of Sorrow venerated in mount calvary, Holy Land.
A chromolithograph is a technique developed in the 19th century that involved several woodblocks with the colors of the piece. Each color pressed separately onto the paper. Some details potentially hand painted.
