Description
1876 Japanese Taiwan War Ukiyoe Intaglio Meiji COLOR Illustrated Woodblock Print
An interesting 18th century woodblock-print of "Meiji Taipingji." It is a Japanese war history of the Meiji period edited by the Ukiyoe painter Utagawa Fusatane and Kobayashi Eitaku, including civil wars and foreign wars. The most interesting of this set of books is the eighth and ninth volumes, because these two volumes are mainly about the "peony society incident" in which the Japanese army conquered Taiwan. The volume discusses Japan’s attempt to ‘civilize’ the Taiwanese peoples, ultimately finding them unable to become ‘civilized,’ clearly depicting Japan’s nationalistic ideas of superiority which would eventually lead to their involvement in WWII.
This rare 1876 edition is written in a column format with furigana usage for easier reading, bound in the “fukurotoji (variously translated as “bound-pocket,” or “pouch” binding)” style! This set is beautifully illustrated in color as well as several prints in the intaglio technique to represent the night scene with high black winds.
