A folk-art secretary desk having an open top with gallery, pigeon holes, and single drawer, over a drop front desk with inlaid star in the center of the paneled lid, over 1 long drawer, over 2 short drawers, over a central single paneled door flanked by 2 side drawers with original cast iron clam shape like pulls over shaped front skirt. The interior of desk with fitted slots over 4 short drawers. The sides in paneled wainscot applied in slanted, vertical and horizontal positions. Condition: Original grungy surface, with expected use wear, and missing one of the metal pulls on the long drawer - overall good condition, probably late 19th century. Measures 29 1/4"W x 10 1/2"D x 72"H. Note the desk is in 2 sections (see photos), the lower section being the larger of the 2 and measuring 48 5/8"H. Descended from the Reverend James Johnson family, Easton CT (Reverend Johnson, 1734-1810, graduate of Yale University). The Reverend Johnson homestead was constructed in 1760 and has been in the same family for over 7 generations. He was the first minister of the Congregational Church of Easton a position which he held for 40 years. The item(s) identified here, were once owned by the Reverend or a descendant.
